The law protects the confidential relationship between a patient and a psychologist. Information disclosed by the patient in sessions cannot be disclosed by the psychologist without written permission from the patient.
- If I suspect abuse of a child, an elderly person or a dependent adult, I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a patient is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
- If I believe a patient intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist the patient's cooperation in ensuring his/her safety. If s/he does not cooperate, I will take further measures without his/her permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure his/her safety.
